AnnotationDemographic characteristics, medication use, self-rated health and walking behaviour of two research-based samples were compared with participants from the National Health Survey (NHS) living in Brisbane (64% participation rate). A general practice (GP) sample of 267 older patients (64% participation rate) was randomly selected from 42 practices, while an electoral roll sample (the Health Status of Older People, HSOP sample) comprised 1,000 older people (72% participation). The distribution of demographic characteristics in the GP group was similar to that of the NHS group, whereas the sample based on the electoral roll contained more men. The GP sample rated their health in the middle of the range, and the electoral group sample rated their health more positively than the NHS group. Medication use differed in both groups compared with the NHS sample. Health related characteristics of the two sample groups differed from the "gold standards" NHS sample. Interpretation of research findings from similar samples would benefit from consideration of the potential effects of selection and response bias. GP sampling frames may provide a useful alternative for population-based research. (RH).
