Annotation | Brazil is experiencing an intense demographic transition; and the industrialisation begun in the 1940s led to rapid urbanisation. The country is characterised by considerable socio-economic inequalities and significant regional demographic variation. The pre-eminent role of the family as caregiver is in jeopardy, as even more people living longer seek family care. Health and social services are grossly inadequate. The Ministry of Health launched the first National Health Policy for older people, with functional capacity as a keyword. All this necessitates an urgent focus on the needs of this fast-growing older population. (RH). |
