Annotation | Historically, people in South Africa were classified in four racial groups, and dissimilar opportunities were available to blacks, coloureds and Indians, as compared to whites, for self-advancement and successful ageing. This article gives a brief demographic profile of the older population, and describes living arrangements for the different racial groups. Social and health care policies are examined, and the future situation of older people under the second democratically elected government is considered. (RH). |
