AnnotationThe Borough of Slough is small unitary authority created in 1998, formerly part of Berkshire. The aim of the joint review is to assess the extent to which local people are served by their social services. User feedback indicates that people were pleased with services received, but had often experienced long waits, for example for occupational therapy (OT) assessment, or for a place in residential or nursing homes, which caused delayed discharges from hospital. The Authority is developing a good range of joint services with statutory and independent sector agencies. The review notes the need for services to maximise people's independence, and to provide safe alternatives to institutional care. There are some examples of good practice in culturally sensitive service provision, such as a day centre for Asian elders, and recruiting minority ethnic staff and providing them with training in community languages. Priorities identified by the review for improving services relate to aspects of budget and staff management. (RH).
