AnnotationPrevalence of dementia in the town of Tajiri (Miyagi Prefecture, Japan) was found to be 8%, whilst the first population-based study in Brazil (Catandova) disclosed a prevalence of 7.1%. To evaluate the effects of environment on development of dementia, older Japanese immigrants living in Brazil were examined. All 192 Japanese immigrants aged 65+ from Miyagi living in the Sao Paolo Metropolitan Area were assessed using the Clinical Dementia Rating Scales (CDR): 13 were diagnosed with dementia, a prevalence of 7.8%. Older subjects suffered more from dementia, and, paradoxically, the more highly educated subjects also suffered more. Prevalence was not thought to be affected by environmental factors. (RH).
