AnnotationThe same assessment procedures for participants in the Leipzig Longitudinal Study of the Aged (LEILA75+) were used in a follow-up 1.6 years after Part 1. Cognitive function was assessed by the Structured Interview for diagnosis of Dementia of the Alzheimer Type, Multi-infarct Dementia and Dementia of other Aetiology according to ICD-10 and DSM-III-R. The annual incidence rate for dementia applying different case definitions was found to be quite similar: 47.4 per 1000 with DSM-III-R, and 45.8 per 1000 with ICD-10. Regardless of which diagnostic classification is used, incidence rates increase with age. However, there is the possibility of bias arising from refusal to participate, or deaths occurring after the original interviews. (RH).
