AnnotationIn this survey on current and future employment preferences carried out in 1998, 30,557 people aged 16-46 across the 15 European Union (EU) Member States and Norway were interviewed by telephone. Of the 17,908 non-employed, 7,749 expressed the wish not to work in 5 years, and were excluded from the analysis. The findings outlined show that working patterns and preferences of employed people remain surprisingly similar over different phases of life. However, there are some age group differences: for example, while those aged 45-54 are still quite work oriented, one in four of those aged 55-59 are already retired. The findings also cover issues such as satisfaction with working hours, the benefits of work, job choices of older women, and preparing for life after work (including gradual retirement). (RH).
