AnnotationResidential and nursing homes provide an essential contribution towards the care of people with dementia. The authors used dementia care mapping (DCM) to evaluate the quality of care in 10 private sector and 7 NHS continuing care facilities in three regions of the UK. The dementia care index rated all 7 NHS and 5 of the private care facilities as needing radical improvement, while the remaining 5 private sector facilities were rated as needing much improvement. These results reflect the need for review and improvement of standards of care in residential and nursing homes which have been highlighted in other recent reports. (RH).
