AnnotationMeeting spiritual needs is a crucial aspect of caring for older people. But do staff in care homes understand what is meant by the term, and do they accept responsibility for it? A survey of nursing and residential homes in the Trent Region showed managers interpreted spiritual care very broadly. While most thought that all home staff had a responsibility for residents' spiritual care, a small minority felt that such care was not their responsibility. The authors note that the National Service Framework (NSF) for older people, and the National Minimum Standards for care homes for older people both specify that spiritual needs must be met as part of end-of-life care.
