AnnotationNine controlled studies evaluating the effectiveness of community rehabilitation schemes developed to facilitate effective discharge from hospital are reviewed. Six resulted in improved outcome, with no overall or mixed outcome differences for the other three. Four of the studies appeared to result in cost savings, mainly by reduced length of hospital stay. The article also briefly describes the community outreach rehabilitation scheme developed in York since 1988. (RH).
