AnnotationRecent health care policy has promoted the community hospital as one remedy for reducing district general hospital use, but a literature review reveals weak evidence to support this policy. Although descriptive studies demonstrate the flexible, multi-purpose role of community hospitals, there is a paucity of clinical outcome studies and no robust health economic evaluation. Community hospitals have an important potential role in post acute care of older people. However, evaluation by randomised trial is required to demonstrate effectiveness and cost effectiveness of transfer to a community hospital compared to remaining in a district general hospital. (RH).
