AnnotationTo coincide with the publication of the National Service Framework for Older People in March 2001, the Stroke Association commissioned the College of Health to carry out a large-scale survey of stroke patients and carers. Returned questionnaires from 2,252 patients and carers form the basis of this report. The survey indicates a need for speedy implementation of the NSF, and for improvements in the provision of stroke services to all patients, regardless of age. Improvements are recommended in several key areas, from provision of stroke units, rehabilitation, discharge arrangements, and primary care involvement, to assessment of and provision for carers' needs. The report summarises the stroke component of the NSF; describes the survey methods and respondents' characteristics; presents and discusses the survey's findings; and makes recommendations accordingly.
