Annotation | Data from the General Practice Research Database (GPRD) indicates that in 1988, the crude rate of treated heart failure was 12.2 per 1000 males and 15.8 per 1000 females, compared with 11.9 per 1000 males and 16.3 per 1,000 females in 1994. Between 1994 and 1998, the percentage of heart failure patients prescribed angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors increased from 27% to 53% for men, and from 30% to 44% for women. Prescription of beta blockers increased from 9% to 11% for men, and from 10% to 11% for women. These findings suggest that management of heart failure in primary care is changing to reflect current guidelines. Future analyses will also enable some assessment of whether the National Service Framework (NSF) has helped to improve the management of heart failure patients. (RH). |
