Annotation | A therapeutic group (comprising 6 women and 1 man) aimed at coping with the experience of forgetting, was run for 7 weeks at Grenoside Grange Day Hospital. Each session lasted 1.5 hours, the following themes and topics being covered in the first half of each: an introduction; causes of memory problems; understanding why people forget; identifying how one's life has changed; changes to social life and activities; worries and concerns about the future; and a review and summary. The final part of each session focused on identifying memory aids and memory coping strategies. Other points of interest, concern and questions emerged from discussions, including: attendance at the day hospital; memory problems as a normal consequence of ageing; the role of the family; independence versus dependency; feelings associated with having memory problems; and other worries and concerns. Evaluation and feedback indicate that the group achieved its aims, in particular, the transfer of memory coping information back into the home environment. (RH). |
