AnnotationStaff with informal caring responsibilities for adults rather than children are an often overlooked section of the workforce. This article considers working carers in social services. It presents and discusses data from the Workforce Studies, a longitudinal quantitative study of the social services workforce carried out by the National Institute for Social Work (NISW) from 1993/94 to 1995/96. At the time of the survey, more than a quarter of the social services workforce cared informally for another adult. Where employers fail to support carers, costs can be high in terms of stress, and of lost promotion, development and training opportunities. Some carer-friendly policies are suggested. (RH).
