AnnotationHitherto, health authorities have been required to register and inspect nursing homes, mental nursing homes and a range of other private and voluntary health care facilities under Part II of the Registered Homes Act 1984. From April 2002, these responsibilities transfer to the National Care Standards Commission (NCSC). This report presents findings on nursing home inspections by six health authorities: Avon, Dorset, Enfield, Haringey, Kent, and Liverpool. It sets out questions that can be used by managers to evaluate their own services and to put in place any necessary changes before the transfer to the NCSC. Other chapters concern: registration of proprietors and approval of nurses in charge of nursing homes; management and staffing; planning and managing care; patients and inspections; and ensuring compliance.
