Annotation | The concept of demographic transition refers to the effect of declining birth and death rates on the size and age distribution of populations. This review of the most important recent literature on ageing focuses on the social and health consequences of this population change, particularly for developing countries. Dimensions of demographic transition examined include older people's health needs, the incidence of poverty and the effects of economic dependence, urban-rural comparisons, gender differences, and positive approaches to ageing. The societal implications of an expanding ageing population are examined, and priority areas for research and development are suggested. (RH). |
