Annotation | Retirement as a transitional stage in both individual and marital life cycles is considered in this of 469 Israeli couples categorised either as: synchronous pre-retired couples (close to retirement) or retired couples; or asychronous (one spouse retired, the other still employed). Differences between groups were examined in three areas. First, regarding division of tasks in the home, feminine and general tasks were usually more egalitarian among those retired than those still working; while masculine tasks were usually carried by the husbands in all groups. Second, with respect to quality of marriage, the pre-retired couples expressed more marital complaints than did the retired couples, while no differences were found between either of the asychronous groups. Nonetheless, marital relations (the third area) were generally egalitarian for all groups. (RH). |
