Annotation | 58 recently widowed participants were recruited from the Cardiovascular Health Study (CHS) Pittsburgh group, along with 58 married subjects matched for age, sex and race. Dietary intake was assessed during a clinic visit using Willett's Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ). Mean weight loss and the prevalence of weight loss were significantly higher for widowed participants. They ate more meals alone, ate out more each week, and had fewer snacks and home-made meals. They also enjoyed eating less. Higher cognitive functioning score, younger age, and better appetite were protective against weight loss. (RH). |
