Annotation | Numbers of skilled researchers and trained academics in gerontology and geriatrics in Europe are insufficient to respond to the challenge of improving our knowledge and skills in these subject areas. The Population Activities Unit of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN/ECE) in its 1998 report "Ageing related research survey" noted the lack of a European co-ordinating agency, rather a multiplicity of local, national and multinational organisations. This article outlines the nature of such organisations, the 5th EC Program "Improving the Quality of Life and Management of Living Resources" (1999-2002), and training for the next generation of European medical doctors in geriatrics.
