AnnotationHaving completed its demographic transition, Japan is being forced to face the ageing of a substantial proportion of the population before other developed nations do. Extreme population ageing has led to increases in the demand for social services for older people and the family, which have far exceeded existing supply of services. This article was first presented as a paper at the 4th Global Conference on Ageing. In it, the author examines family relations, health services, retirement, and economic well-being of Japan's ageing population. Challenges and implications for future elder care are discussed. (RH).
