AnnotationThe quality and type of support received by carers depends far more on where they live and with whom they are in contact in social services than on what they need. During 1997 and 1998, the Social Services Inspectorate (SSI) inspected seven local authority social services departments (SSDs): Bradford, Islington, Merton, Oxfordshire, South Gloucestershire, Sandwell, and York. Inspections looked specifically at how SSDs provide support and services for adults caring for older people and those with physical or learning disabilities or with mental illness. This main report identifies the key priority areas for managers and those with an interest in carers' issues to help develop better services for carers. It also focuses on particular topics for the six standards used in the inspection: service delivery; assessment and care planning procedures; principles for support for carers; information and communication; equal opportunities; and management arrangements. In addition to this report, two leaflets have also been published. One lists issues and provides questions for carers and carers' groups; the other is for front-line social services staff and their managers. (RH).
