Annotation | The conference, chaired by Claire Rayner, examined the progress and achievements of the Dignity on the Ward Campaign since being sparked off by an article in the Observer in September 1997. Martin Bright had written then concerning the poor quality of care his grandmother had received in hospital. Speakers identified key challenges for further Campaign work: the experiences of older people from minority ethnic communities; education and training of nurses and health care assistants; older people's priorities for health and social care; the role of the Commission for Health Improvement (CHI) in raising standards of care for older people; specialist nurses; and respecting the individual. Four parallel sessions considered: principles of good practice in acute hospital care for older people; caring for patients with dementia or confusion in acute settings; acute hospital care for older people from minority ethnic communities; and advocacy with older people in hospital. The Campaign's ability to influence government thinking is noted, as the National Service Framework for Older People had been published since the Conference. (RH). |
