AnnotationThis study's objective was to compare gender differences in mood disorders, service utilization and health care costs for a random sample of Medicare elderly beneficiaries of Tennessee (5% random sample of 35,673 beneficiaries). The dependent variables were: patients with ICD-9 diagnosis for mood disorder (major depression and other depression); service utilization (number of outpatient visits, skilled nursing visits, etc.); and health care costs. The independent variable was gender. The results indicated that mood disorders, outpatient services and total mental health costs are higher for women than men; however, total health care costs are higher for men than women. (KJ/RH).
