Annotation | To determine the prevalence of dementia in centenarians from the New England Centenarian Study, the authors analysed neuropsychological, medical and functional status data for 34 of the 43 centenarians. 22 had at least some degree of dementia. The authors calculated Barthel Index scores to determine centenarians' ability to perform activities of daily living (ADLs). There was a statistically significant correlation between the Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR) scores and Barthel Index scores. Correlation was strongest for those with no or severe dementia, with the greatest range of function measured for those with moderate dementia. (RH). |
