AnnotationIndependence and autonomy for older people depends on sustaining personal mobility, the loss of which can result in a substantial reduction in quality of life. The objective of this workshop was to examine mobility issues from a number of different perspectives, including those of geriatricians, gerontologists, transport specialists and agencies working with older people. This report summarises papers on accessibility, adapting public transport, concessionary fares, issues for pedestrians, driving safely, and the role of government in understanding older people's requirements. The workshop was sponsored by the British Gas Help the Aged Partnership; the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR); the Centre for Ageing and Public Health, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine; and the Transport Studies Group, University of Westminster.
