AnnotationThis paper is a companion piece to those by Zarit and Leitsch, and Beck in this issue of Aging & Mental Health. Using three studies representing varied methodologies (a demonstration project, focus group research, and a cross-sectional survey), the paper discusses issues that are especially critical to dementia caregiver research with older racial and ethnic minorities and their family caregivers, particularly those of Latino origin. It considers: barriers to inclusion of racial and ethnic minorities in dementia research; outreach and recruitment strategies (the El Porto Alzheimer's Disease Project); methodological issues with older disabled consumers (Correlates of Depression Study); and variations in the stress and coping model (Multi-Ethnic Spousal Caregiver Study).
