Annotation | Papers by Lawton, and Charness & Holley in this issue of Aging & Mental Health present two different but complementary views about our current knowledge of environments for people with Alzheimer's disease (AD), and suggest distinct approaches for advancing our knowledge in this area. This paper reviews some of the common themes in their papers; provides more concrete examples of links between research and design; and presents a more systematic conceptualisation of the physical and social environments which may serve as a foundation for future research on care settings for people with dementia.
