Annotation | Since Shanas and Streib's 1968 study refuted the myth that families abandon their older members, great progress has been made regarding care-giving theories and processes. This article provides a critique of Robert Woods' paper, "Discovering the person with Alzheimer's disease" in this issue of Aging & Mental Health. It focuses on: the holistic approach to dementia research; empowering the person and the family; the inter-relationship between caregiver stress and the behaviour of the person with dementia (PWD); and the person's sense of identity as a product of the dyad's relationship, as developed in Tom Kitwood's work on the concept of "personhood".
