AnnotationThe social environments, staff behaviour and social interaction of 72 older clients in two US day care centres were examined using qualitative research techniques. Goffman's 1961 description of the psycho-social effects of the "total institution" was used as a framework for conceptualising the effects of "partial institution" on older people. When staff and environment were more infantilising, provided less autonomy, and fewer opportunities for privacy regulation, clients had lower social interaction with their peers. In contrast, when the centre had a more adult setting, with age-appropriate activities, there was greater privacy regulation, autonomy, social contact and friendships among clients. (RH).
