Annotation | The Audit Commission report, "The coming of age: improving care services for older people" (1997) identified rising numbers of older people admitted and readmitted to hospital, and for which the responsibilities of health and social services overlap. This article reports the main findings from an interprofessional study in Birmingham, which attempted to involve older people who had experienced emergency admissions to hospital in the planning of future services. The aim was to examine the medical and social factors leading to admission, and to learn more of the scope for preventative work in the future. 52 over 65s, between them accounting for 63 hospital admissions, were interviewed. Findings highlight the scope for preventative work and the need for closer working between health and social services. These issues are discussed in the context of current government strategies and policies on health and welfare reforms. (RH). |
