AnnotationThe Care and Support Inquiry was established by the King's Fund in 2000 under the chairmanship of Julia Unwin. It examined the quality of physical, practical or emotional support given to adults needing help because of frailty in old age, mental health problems, physical disabilities, chronic illness, and other needs associated with drug and alcohol misuse and homelessness. In the report, "physical, practical or emotional support" encompasses a wide range of services, including personal care, that is, help with self-care and activities of daily living (ADLs), also tasks closer to nursing care. Concerns are raised about recruitment and retention, skills and values of staff, regulation and training, and management development in health, housing and social care agencies. Appendices include a profile of the social care workforce and on the nature of the consultation with service users and carers. The report concludes that fundamental shifts in attitudes and values are required, if there is not to be a crisis in the care sector. (RH).
