AnnotationIn this Danish study, triggers in the Resident Assessment Instruments (RAI) for older people receiving home care or living in nursing homes identified a group of subjects with decreased nutritional intake. Participants (38 receiving home care and 41 living in nursing homes) were instructed to record all food eaten on 4 consecutive days (including one weekend day). Assessment was made of energy and protein intake, and body mass index (BMI) was calculated. One or more triggers were present in most underweight or undernourished subjects. Food remaining on the plate was more effective as a predictor than all individual or combination of triggers in detecting nursing home subjects with insufficient energy or protein intake. No individual or combination of triggers could detect those living at home who had sufficient energy or protein intake. Observation of food intake seems to be the best way of detecting insufficient energy or protein intake. (RH).
