AnnotationBreathlessness in older people is an important public health issue. One in three over 70s who live in their own homes become breathless when walking on level ground with people of their own age. A modified Medical Research Council (MRC) dyspnoea questionnaire to identify breathlessness was sent to 1404 selected over 70s from general practitioners' lists in the South Wales town of Barry. A further random sample of 500 had home visits. Prevalence of breathlessness was 32.3%. Breathless subjects had poorer functional status than those who were non-breathless. They also had poorer physical and mental health, were more likely to be anxious and depressed, and hence their quality of life was affected. (RH).
