AnnotationIn a representative sample of over 75s living at home in Quebec and identified to be at risk of functional decline, 245 were randomised to a study group and assessed at home by a nurse on 12 dimensions. A monthly telephone contact was carried out by the nurse for surveillance, and to verify that recommendations had been applied. Of the 494 over 75s in the study, 48 (19.6%) of the 245 in the study group, and 49 (19.7%) in the control group had functional decline. There were no differences between the groups in all secondary outcomes. More research is needed on improving the efficacy of treatment of the major causes of functional decline. Only then might multidimensional programmes be efficacious. (RH).
