Annotation | 791 Swiss over 75s living in the community in Bern were assessed quarterly for disability risk status, based on six baseline predictors of functional deterioration. After 3 years, surviving participants at low baseline risk were less dependent in instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs), compared with a control group. For those at high baseline risk, there were no favourable intervention effects on ADL, and an unfavourable increase in nursing home admissions. Despite the similar health status of subjects, one of the three nurses carrying out assessments identified fewer problems compared with those identified by the other two nurses: their low-risk subjects reacted favourably, with reduced nursing home admissions.
