AnnotationThe theoretical bases for this research were the Health Belief Model and the health locus of control. A self-selected sample of 152 American women aged 45-54 completing a questionnaire had high scores for the internal locus of control. Their attitudes also related to the Health Belief Model. Before the intervention, participants had mean calcium intake of 1,423 mg/day; after, this increased to 1,614 mg/day. Participants reported significant increase in frequency of exercise and a decrease in consumption of caffeine-containing beverages after the intervention. Although dietary behaviours and lifestyles of this group may have changed, similar outcomes may not necessarily apply to groups with other social characteristics. (RH).
