AnnotationCataract surgery is both safe and effective for most of those who need it, but the benefits and risks for those aged 85+ are less clear. In these patients - especially those with concomitant cardiovascular diseases - a cautious approach is advised, because of higher risk of systemic complications during surgery. A higher prevalence of pre-existing ocular diseases - for example, age-related maculopathy - may affect cataract surgery outcomes in older patients. Independent of pre-existing ocular diseases, increasing age is associated with poorer cataract surgery outcomes. (RH).
