AnnotationPapers in this compilation are based on presentations at the 1998 annual conference of the British Society of Gerontology (BSG), and critically examine care services for older people. Contributors debate the assumptions and values underlying established welfare programmes: rationing care, designing and implementing a National Service Framework (NSF), and the medical-social boundary of personal care. They consider the case for change as growing demands put health and social services under increasing pressure. Specific areas discussed in detail include: discharge from hospital to care home; organisation of effective domiciliary social care; palliative care; the impact of new technologies on older people's lives; and problems of detachment or social exclusion for Chinese and Bangladeshi older people in Britain. The Averil Osborn Fund's role in involving older people in research precedes a concluding chapter on future expectations for care services. (RH).
