AnnotationThe Observation List for early signs of Dementia (OLD) described in this paper is a new, patient-friendly approach to the early diagnosis of possible Alzheimer's disease (AD) by general practitioners (GPs). The observation list was designed on the basis of expert opinion about early signs and symptoms of AD. Field study was conducted with 22 Dutch GPs, who between them observed 470 patients using the OLD. Validation was by interviews with 60 selected patients and 39 family members. The OLD was found to be be a valid and reliable method to detect early signs of dementia in general practice that can indicate when it may be useful to use existing screening instruments. (RH).
