Annotation | "Essence of care" has been designed to support the measures to improve quality set out in "A first class service" (DoH, 1998). It contains benchmarking tools for health professionals (particularly nurses and health visitors) related to eight aspects of care: principles of self-care; food and nutrition; personal and oral hygiene; continence and bladder and bowel care; pressure ulcers; record keeping; safety of clients or patients with mental health needs in acute mental health and general hospital settings; and privacy and dignity. The list is not an exhaustive account of every fundamental aspect of care, but it represents those elements identified by patients and professionals as crucial to the quality of a patient's care experience.
