AnnotationThe effects of 9 months of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) on cognitive performance were determined in women aged 75+ in a 9-month randomised, double-blinded, placebo-controlled parallel trial. Subjects were 52 postmenopausal American women (aged 75-91 years) without known contraindications to HRT or evidence of dementia or depression. Although conclusions are limited by small sample size and the relatively short duration of treatment, results suggest that 9 months of oestrogen replacement in combination with trimonthly progestin does not improve cognitive performance in women over 75 years who do not have dementia or depression.
