AnnotationRestraint is an emotive issue, with legal and ethical dimensions, as well as psychological and physical effects on the person being restrained. This article aims to raise awareness of the issue - especially as it applies to older people in residential or nursing home care - and to inform nurses why and how restraint should be avoided wherever possible. Specifically the article aims to: provide a working definition of restraint; outline the range of nursing actions that could constitute restraint; explain the adverse consequences of restraint; describe strategies whereby restraint may be avoided when working with older people; and provide a policy for dealing with situations where restraint may be necessary.
