AnnotationHealthcare professionals should be anticipating the needs of older carers - many of whom are being left unsupported - and provide a more proactive service when offering help. This summary outlines research which aims to fill gaps in our knowledge about support for carers, and to provide evidence and guidance for professionals. The study undertaken was based on a group of carers and a group of primary care professionals (principally district nurses and community psychiatric nurses) from two health authority areas in north-west England. Implications for policy and practice are outlined. (RH).
