Annotation | The prevalence of depressive symptoms in visually impaired nursing home residents is high, and screening with a standardised instrument - the Geriatric Depression Scale, GDS - may be useful. In a Hong Kong nursing home designed for people with impaired vision, the residents' duration of blindness appears to have no correlation with depression. People with sensory impairment are more prone to depression when adapting to changes in the social environment, as in the event of institutionalisation. After controlling for socio-demographic factors such as age, duration of institutionalisation and duration of blindness, functional disability is an independent predictor of depression. (RH). |
