Annotation | That ageing-in-place and retirement migration are intricately linked has been overlooked by behavioural approaches to migration by older people. By contrast, "humanistic" inquiry has provided important insights, but does not encapsulate the full range of experience involved in older people's lives. To move beyond humanistic research and key concepts such as place attachment, the philosophy of John Dewey is introduced. Dewey's viewpoint is merged with the geographical concept into what might be termed "place integration", and then compared with humanistic perspectives on ageing-in-place and retirement migration decision-making. Fundamental differences such as temporal orientation and substantive focus are illustrated and discussed, along with the utility of such a perspective. (RH). |
