AnnotationThe prevalence of casino gambling as a social activity for active older Americans (age 65+) is investigated in a postal survey sent to activity directors of residential and assisted-care facilities, and older people's and retirement centres. Bingo was the most popular on-location type social activity (23%), while on average, 16% of the 6,957 older people represented in the survey were reported as having taken part in facility-sponsored trips to a casino at least once a month. In addition, 66% of facilities were offered additional gambling day trips, which were accepted in 58% of the cases. Although activities such as day trips to museums, libraries and/or the zoo were represented (14% participation rate), the findings suggest a need for greater awareness of the impact casino gambling may have on retired older Americans.
