AnnotationMemory problems are often the first signs of dementia, and continue to be the symptom most commonly described by carers. This article assesses an external memory aid, an instructional audio tape, developed in the 1980s by Sharon Arkin - a certified clinical mental health counsellor in the US - as a way of dealing with her mother's probable Alzheimer's disease (AD). The authors examine whether this approach could be replicated in a UK context, and present the results of one case. A multiple baseline design was used, with the hypothesis that individuals with dementia would show a significant enhancement to biographical memory resulting from the use of audio-taped memory quizzes.
