Annotation | Early applications of family therapy tended to focus on the self-regulating function of behaviour. The main therapeutic aim was to shift the balance of relationships to bring about change. From the late 1960s to the mid 1980s, several different "schools" of family therapy arose. Revisions of these approaches placed greater emphasis on bringing about change through understanding, rather than by directly influencing behaviour. More recent reformulations have concentrated on contextual factors (e.g. power, culture and narrative), and how these might influence therapeutic work with older people. In future, theoretical developments within the wider field of older people may well contribute to the practice of family therapy. (RH). |
