AnnotationAge Concern England (ACE), working with local Age Concern organisations, undertook this survey of more than 300 older householders in 35 local authorities across England in late 2000. Interviewees were asked factual and attitudinal questions relating to aspects of living in their own homes. Findings are reported on: mobility within the home; going out in winter; size of household; overcrowding; living alone and isolation; keeping warm in winter; where older people prefer to live; and satisfaction with present home. One of the key objectives was to obtain more information about what older people from ethnic minority backgrounds thought about their homes. Recommendations to Government, local authorities, housing developers and providers are that they ensure that housing enables rather than disables, enhances older people's security and independence, and takes account of older people's preferences.
